Moving a dog or cat from the UAE to Canada

UAE is not on CFIA's rabies-free list: a rabies vaccination certificate is required. Plan on about 30 days if you're starting from scratch, or 7 if your pet is already microchipped and rabies-vaccinated.

  1. At least 7 days before

    Rabies vaccination certificate

Required for dogs and cats aged 3 months or older. Issued by a licensed vet, in English or French, identifying the animal (breed, colour, weight) and showing current vaccination with vaccine name, date and validity.

  2. Before travel

    Health certificate (puppies only)Dogs only

Dogs 8 months or older travelling as personal pets need only the rabies certificate. Unaccompanied dogs under 8 months need a vet health certificate issued within 72 hours of arrival.

  3. Before travel

    Microchip (recommended)

Not listed by CFIA for personal pets, but it ties the dog to its paperwork. Airlines and the UAE export side expect one.

  4. Before travel

    Border inspection

Canada Border Services Agency checks documents on arrival and may refer non-compliant dogs to CFIA. No quarantine for compliant personal pets.

  5. 1–5 days before

MOCCAE export permit + health certificate UAE side · to confirm

Apply through the MOCCAE portal/app once destination documents are ready. Secondary sources report the permit is issued in 24–48h and the health certificate 24–72h before departure.
